Chairman Wontumi’s Arrest: Lawful Action or Political Witch-Hunt?
By Hon. KOB
On Monday, May 26, 2025, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, voluntarily honored an invitation from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at its head office in Accra. Following a professional engagement, he was released and asked to report again on Tuesday, May 27 at 3:00 p.m., which he complied with in good faith.
However, just as the CID concluded its interaction with him on Tuesday and he stepped out of their premises, operatives from the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) carried out a sudden and aggressive arrest in the forecourt of the CID headquarters — in what many eyewitnesses have described as a “Rambo-style operation.”
Since then, Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has remained in custody. Although bail has reportedly been granted, the staggering amount of GH¢50 million has triggered widespread public concern, with many viewing it as excessive, punitive, and politically motivated.
A Powerful Political Figure
Chairman Wontumi is not just any politician. He is a formidable grassroots mobilizer and a key strategist for the NPP. The Ashanti Region — where he serves as chairman — is the party’s most significant electoral base, and his influence there carries national implications.
To detain such a figure in such a militarized and dramatic manner, especially after full cooperation with the CID, raises fundamental questions about the real motivations behind his arrest. Ghanaians are asking: Is this justice or political persecution?
Bail Is Not Meant to Punish
No one is above the law. That principle is not in dispute. However, justice must be administered fairly, impartially, and proportionately.
The imposition of a GH¢50 million bail — without conviction — appears to be more of a political tactic than a legal necessity. It raises the specter of selective justice, and reinforces the suspicion that some state institutions are being used to intimidate and silence critical political voices.
A Caution to the Ruling NDC Government
To the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration under President John Dramani Mahama, this development demands sober reflection. While the NDC holds the reins of government today, political power is never permanent.
The next general elections are in 2028, and history has shown that Ghanaian voters have the power — and the will — to hold leaders accountable for actions that threaten justice, fairness, and democracy.
What message is being sent to the international community when a prominent opposition leader is arrested in such a high-handed manner after cooperating with lawful authority? What does this signal to investors, diplomatic partners, and civil society about Ghana’s commitment to rule of law?
Ghana’s Democracy Is Watching
The strength of a democracy is not tested when things are easy, but when institutions are challenged to act above partisan interests.
We call on the EOCO, the CID, and all state institutions to operate with independence, professionalism, and integrity. They are mandated to serve Ghana — not any political party.
Furthermore, we urge civil society, religious leaders, traditional authorities, and all democracy-loving citizens to raise their voices in defense of due process and political neutrality in our justice system.
Conclusion
This issue goes far beyond Chairman Wontumi. It touches on the heart of Ghana’s democratic fabric. Are we building a society where justice is blind and fair — or a system where might suppresses right?
If opposition leaders can be treated this way today, ordinary citizens could be next tomorrow.
Let us remain vigilant. Let us defend our democracy. And let us remind those in power that tables do turn — and history never forgets.
