In a stunning reversal, Wontumi TV has publicly apologized to President John Dramani Mahama, and the Ghanaian public for what it now calls “unfounded and inappropriate” allegations made by one of its presenters.

The controversial statement, made on Saturday, August 9, 2025, by on-air personality Akyenkwaa Nana Kofi Asare, implied that the President had a connection to the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed several lives. The baseless claim triggered outrage across the political spectrum and among the general public, prompting swift condemnation.

In a strongly worded apology released by Wontumi TV management, the station distanced itself from the remarks, stating unequivocally that they do “not represent the views, position, or policy of Wontumi TV.”

“We acknowledge that the statement was inappropriate, unfounded, and contrary to our station’s values,” the statement reads. The management also confirmed that disciplinary action is being taken against the presenter, and editorial guidelines are being reinforced to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The apology further expressed deep regret for any distress or reputational harm caused to President Mahama, the NDC, and the bereaved families. In a call for national unity, the station extended its condolences to those affected by the helicopter tragedy and urged for “sensitivity in discussing matters of national grief.”

The incident has sparked renewed conversations about the role of media responsibility in Ghana’s political discourse, especially in times of national tragedy.
