In a heartwarming twist that stunned many, Amoako Yankyira Samuel, a visually impaired Level 200 student at Wesley College of Education in Kumasi, has emerged as one of just 500 recipients of the MTN Ghana Bright Scholarship award, beating out over 3,000 other hopefuls.

Against all odds, Samuel’s unwavering determination and academic brilliance shone through as he rose to the top from a staggering 3,691 applicants.

He makes the number 33, representing differently able persons who forms part of the total number of 500 candidates who were selected for this year’s scholarship.

The scholarship, announced during a grand ceremony at KNUST on Monday, 8th September 2025, is more than just financial aid. It’s a lifeline.

With full coverage for tuition, accommodation, a monthly stipend, and even a laptop, the support marks a dramatic turning point in Samuel’s journey, a journey marked by resilience, grit, and an unshakable belief in himself.

β€œI couldn’t believe it,” he said, fighting back tears. β€œGetting that interview invite alone gave me hope. But to be selected? It felt like I was dreaming.”

This year, the MTN Ghana Foundation awarded scholarships to 300 university students in STEM and vocational programs, and 200 public school teachers pursuing further education. Yet it is stories like Samuel’s that truly capture the spirit of the initiative, transforming lives and defying expectations.

Amoako Yankyira Samuel is now not just a student. He’s a symbol of hope, a living testament that disability is not defeat, and that with the right support, nothing is impossible.
