Job 14:1-2
“Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.”

Dr. Samuel Sarpong, affectionately known as Sammy Tugar and Castro, was born on 7th November 1957 in Adadientem to Mr. Kwabena Mensah Sarpong (of blessed memory) and Mrs. Agnes Boakye Sarpong.

From humble beginnings, he rose to become a distinguished public servant, politician, and community leader whose life was marked by service, courage, and resilience.

Early Life and Education

His educational journey began in Adadientem and continued through Besease R/C, Sefwi Wiawso, and finally Esease Middle School, where he completed his basic education.

He then attended Osei Tutu Secondary School, and later Wesley College, where he trained as a teacher.

During his time there, he was an active athlete, excelling as a cross-country runner and high jumper.

After graduating, he taught at Juaben Secondary School from 1981 to 1982 as a Physical Education and Asante Twi teacher.

Rise in Public Service and Leadership

Dr. Sarpong’s leadership potential quickly became evident. He was appointed PDC Coordinator for the Ejisu/Juaben District, where he led the Programme of Action to Mitigate the Social Costs of Adjustment (PAMSCAD).

His thirst for knowledge took him abroad—first to Cuba, where he studied criminology, and later to Bulgaria for further studies.

Professional and Political Career

His professional career was both diverse and impactful. He served in several key institutions:

  • Special Branch (now BNI)
  • Ashanti Regional Investigation Committee (ASHRIC), which later evolved into the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) and eventually the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO)
  • Acting Director of SFO (Northern Sector), overseeing Ashanti, Bono Ahafo, Northern, Upper East, and Upper West Regions

In politics, Dr. Sarpong held numerous leadership positions:

  • Mayor of Kumasi (2009)
  • Ashanti Regional Minister (2013)
  • Central Regional Minister
  • Parliamentary Candidate for Nyiaeso (NDC) in 2016
  • Director of the State Housing Corporation

He later earned an Executive Master’s Degree from GIMPA.

A dedicated member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), he served as Vice Chairman and was instrumental in establishing the NDC Party Office in Nyiaeso. He treated everyone with respect and fairness, regardless of political affiliation, creed, or background. A founding member of the NDC, he remained committed to the party’s values and growth throughout his life.

As a respected traditional leader, he was also enstooled as Nkosohene of Cape Coast.

Personal Life and Legacy

Dr. Sarpong was married to Mrs. Hannah Sarpong, and together they were blessed with five children—four sons and one daughter.

On a tragic day, his life of dedication and service was abruptly cut short when he became one of eight gallant individuals who perished in a helicopter crash at Sikaman–Brofoyedu in the Ashanti Region.

A Legacy That Lives On

Dr. Samuel Sarpong leaves behind a powerful legacy of selfless leadership, unwavering patriotism, and a deep love for family, community, and country. His life and contributions will continue to inspire generations to come.
