The streets of the University of Ghana came alive with energy and purpose on Friday as 59 enthusiastic cyclists took part in the maiden edition of “Bike Your Trotro”, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at promoting cycling as a fun, sustainable alternative to traditional transport.

Organized by Healthy Alliance, a dynamic youth-led group under the Youth Climate Action Fund II (YCAF II), the event transformed the Legon campus into a vibrant hub of climate action, community spirit, and pedal-powered change.

More than just a biking fun fair, Bike Your Trotro is part of Accra’s bold climate-conscious agenda under the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative, in collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).

Representing the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, at the event was Mr. Kwame Frimpong, who emphasized the city’s unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability. “This isn’t just a fun ride,” he declared. “Cycling must be embraced not only as a form of exercise but as a frontline strategy in our fight against climate change.”

With carbon emissions soaring in urban centers and traffic congestion worsening, initiatives like Bike Your Trotro are being hailed as timely interventions. The Mayor’s office has pledged full support for future editions, signaling a promising future for cycling culture in Ghana’s capital.

Participants described the event as both thrilling and empowering, calling for more youth-driven climate actions and city-wide investments in safe, bike-friendly infrastructure.

Could pedal power be Accra’s next big climate solution? If the energy at Bike Your Trotro is any indication, the answer is a resounding yes.
