The Member of Parliament for Bantama Constituency, Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye, has called on Parliament to exercise caution and ensure proper due diligence in the consideration of the proposed Accra–Kumasi Expressway.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, the Bantama MP said he used the opportunity on the floor of Parliament yesterday to clearly outline his principled position on the project, stressing that while he supports the vision of a modern expressway linking Accra and Kumasi, the process leading to its approval must be thorough and transparent.

Hon. Asenso-Boakye described the Accra–Kumasi corridor as vital to Ghana’s economy, trade, and national integration, noting that no serious policymaker would oppose such critical infrastructure. However, he raised concerns about the possibility of abandoning the existing Accra–Kumasi Highway, which is already about 64 percent complete.

He welcomed assurances from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that the ongoing highway project would not be abandoned and would be completed alongside the proposed expressway.

Despite this assurance, the MP cautioned against rushing parliamentary approval for the project, pointing out that several key components are yet to be finalized. According to him, there is currently no completed feasibility study before Parliament, the total project cost remains unknown, the engineering design has not been finalized, and the final alignment of the expressway has not been determined.
He noted that Parliament is nevertheless being asked to approve a concession agreement under these circumstances, a move he believes requires careful reconsideration.
“Doing the right project must also mean doing it the right way,” Hon. Asenso-Boakye stated, emphasizing that prudence, proper sequencing, and due diligence are essential safeguards for value for money and Ghana’s fiscal sustainability.
He concluded by reaffirming his support for the expressway concept but insisted that proper preparation, transparency, and careful evaluation must precede any final commitments.
