Rohey Malick Lowe, Mayor of Banjul is pushing for an international support for women who have embraced agriculture as a profession in the village of Jarra Dasilame-Lower River Region of Gambia.
Rohey Malick Lowe is the first female Mayor who has made history of being re-elected as a current Mayor and also President of Local Elected Women of Africa (Rafaela).
On Saturday, 29th March 2024, she visited women in the village and was thrilled by their efforts displayed in the sector of agriculture to sustain their families and also empower themselves economically.
However, during the visit, she was saddened by the report of low yields; a challenge caused as a result of water shortage.
They lack adequate water to irrigate their crops and most of the crops are damaged due to extreme heat and lack of water.
In an exclusive interview with www.leakyghana.com, the Mayor of Banjul, Rohey Malick Lowe called for a swift intervention to save the plight of women within the area.
She believes women are the bread basket of Africa and that their efforts cannot be taken for granted.
Rohey Malick Lowe urged all partners and stakeholders who firmly believe in the empowerment of women to come up with support for these women.
She also sought for Developmental partners’ support to acquire borehole drilling machine to help solve water supply problem in the area.
