Former Minister for Roads and Highways, Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye, has strongly refuted recent comments made by President John Dramani Mahama concerning the Ofankor–Nsawam Road Project, describing them as politically motivated and misleading.

In a statement released today on his official Facebook page, Asenso-Boakye addressed President Mahama’s remarks made during an inspection of the 33-kilometre dual carriageway project. The president had questioned the status of the road and queried why, despite a loan facility being secured, the project remained incomplete.

But Asenso-Boakye clarified that the total cost of the road project is pegged at $346.4 million, with $200 million secured from Afreximbank to partially finance the works. He emphasized that the loan facility was never meant to fully cover the cost and was always expected to be complemented by government budgetary allocations.

“The Afreximbank facility was always intended to be a partial financing instrument,” the former minister stated. “For the President to question that; ‘… a loan was taken for the project, so why is the money finished and the road undone,’ is misleading.”

He further urged Ghanaians to reject what he called “political distortions,” adding that the handing-over notes from the ministry clearly reflect the financing structure of the project.
“This is not the time to play politics with infrastructure,” he added. “It is a time for facts, transparency, and steady progress geared towards the future and development of our beloved country, Ghana.”
The Ofankor–Nsawam Road Project is considered a vital transport corridor linking the Greater Accra Region to key parts of the Eastern and Ashanti Regions. Its timely completion is viewed as crucial for decongesting traffic and enhancing trade and mobility.
As election season heats up, infrastructure development is once again becoming a flashpoint in Ghana’s political discourse, with both leading parties seeking to lay claim to key projects and challenge each other’s record.
