Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, held a strategic meeting with the White House Task Force on the upcoming FIFA World Cup at the Embassy of Ghana in Washington, D.C.

The high-level engagement brought together members of the Embassy’s internal World Cup planning committee, chaired by the Head of Consular Services, Bernard Quantson.

The discussions focused on critical logistical and diplomatic issues affecting Ghanaians expected to travel to the United States for the global football tournament.

Key topics included visa accessibility for Ghanaian supporters, ticket availability and affordability, safety and security arrangements, transportation systems, and the distance between designated base camps and match venues.

The meeting also addressed preparations for high-profile Ghanaian dignitaries who may attend the tournament, as well as broader opportunities to strengthen Ghana–U.S. sports diplomacy.

Leading the U.S. delegation, Task Force Executive Director Andrew A. Guiliamo assured the Ambassador of the United States’ readiness to host international visitors.

He emphasized that adequate measures have been implemented to ensure a smooth and inclusive experience for fans from all participating countries, including Ghana.

Despite these assurances, concerns were raised regarding what was described as a high rate of U.S. visa refusals among Ghanaian applicants.

Discussions also explored the possibility of reviewing current visa arrangements beyond the standard B1/B2 categories to better accommodate World Cup travelers.

Additionally, both sides highlighted the importance of compliance with U.S. immigration regulations.

Emphasis was placed on ensuring that Ghanaian visitors return home promptly after the tournament to avoid potential issues with immigration enforcement authorities.

The meeting marks a significant step in preparations toward Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, reinforcing bilateral cooperation and underscoring the role of sports as a bridge for international relations.
