The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has secured a $3 million grant from the African Development Bank (AfDB) to support the implementation of the Accra Waste Separation and Composting Project, a major step toward transforming the city’s waste management system.

The grant was obtained with technical assistance from the C40 Cities Finance Facility (CFF) and will serve as co-financing to speed up the rollout of the project. According to the AMA, the facility is expected to significantly advance Accra’s transition to climate-smart waste management.

The Accra Waste Separation and Composting Project was chosen for funding as one of only 18 selected proposals out of more than 1,000 submissions received from across Africa. Its strong climate mitigation potential, alignment with both national and municipal climate goals, and its capacity to stimulate long-term, sustainable waste management solutions were key factors in its selection.

Designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance recycling, improve waste diversion from landfills, and strengthen circular economy practices, the project aims to reshape Accra’s waste management system into a more efficient, sustainable and environmentally friendly model.
Commenting on the development, the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, hailed the grant as a major milestone in the city’s commitment to building a cleaner, greener and more climate-resilient capital. He stressed that the AMA remains dedicated to promoting sustainable waste management, lowering emissions and improving environmental health across the metropolis.

Implementation of the project is expected to accelerate in the coming months as the Assembly moves toward operationalising the waste separation and composting systems under the new funding support.
