The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced that the first National Sanitation Day (NSD) exercise for 2026 will take place on Saturday, January 10, across the metropolis.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Assembly said the clean-up exercise will begin at 6:00 a.m. and continue until all assigned sanitation activities are completed.

The exercise was originally scheduled for Saturday, January 3, 2026, but was postponed to allow for intensified Christmas and New Year trading activities within Accra’s Central Business District (CBD).

The AMA described the January sanitation exercise as both strategic and urgent, noting that it comes immediately after a period of heightened commercial activity, increased waste generation and added pressure on the city’s sanitation infrastructure.

According to the statement, and in line with a presidential directive as well as the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (Communal Labour) Bye-Laws, 2017—enacted under Section 181 of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936)—all shops, markets and business premises are required to remain closed from 6:00 a.m. until the exercise is completed.
This, the Assembly explained, is to ensure full public participation in the communal labour exercise.
The AMA said sanitation activities for the day will include desilting and cleaning of drains, sweeping of streets and lanes, removal of unauthorised posters and banners, and general clean-up operations in markets, lorry parks and other public spaces.
The statement, signed by the Head of Public Affairs at the AMA, Mr. Gilbert Nii Ankrah, indicated that the exercise will cover all electoral areas, communities, markets and the CBD. Intensified clean-up efforts are expected at selected locations, including the Cable and Wireless enclave in Okaikoi South, Agbogbloshie Market and its environs, and the Central Business District.
The Assembly urged residents, traders and business operators to fully cooperate with the directive to help improve environmental cleanliness and public health across the capital.
