The telecommunications industry is entering a new era where growth will be driven not just by network expansion but by advanced technology integration and platform-based innovation.

This is according to Stephen Blewett, Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, who emphasized the critical role of Artificial Intelligence (AI), software development, and ecosystem enablement in shaping the future of telecom.
In a recent interview with an Accra-based radio station, Blewett outlined how the sector is evolving from traditional connectivity services to becoming a catalyst for cross-sector digital transformation.

“Connectivity is foundational but it’s no longer the endgame,” Blewett stated. “The real value lies in the digital platforms, AI-enabled services, and developer-driven solutions that are built on top of telecom infrastructure.”
Citing examples such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and Uber platforms that owe their existence to robust telecom networks, he noted that Ghana must now move from being a user of global platforms to a creator of its own.
This requires investment in local talent, coding skills, and innovation ecosystems.
Artificial Intelligence, according to Blewett, will play a central role in network optimization, customer engagement, predictive analytics, and service personalization.
He also highlighted the importance of APIs, cloud-native architecture, and 5G readiness as part of the next phase of MTN Ghana’s infrastructure evolution.
“We’re aligning our Ambition 2025 strategy to focus on digital platforms, financial technology innovation, and inclusive digital participation,” he said.
“That means rethinking our role not just as a network provider but as a technology enabler and ecosystem orchestrator.”
MTN Ghana’s roadmap includes expanded support for developers, startups, and SMEs through digital platforms that provide access to scalable infrastructure, payments integration, and data services.
Blewett concluded by affirming that the telecom sector will remain central to Ghana’s economic modernization—serving as the digital backbone for health, education, finance, agriculture, and more.
“This is not just a transformation of telecom. It’s a transformation of every sector that depends on digital infrastructure,” he said.
