1. Energy Ministry
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh assumed the position of Ghana’s Minister of Energy in 2021, fully aware of the turbulent past of the industry. In order to tackle the issues facing the sector, he came up with practical solutions and pushed himself and his team hard.
He has led numerous important projects in this capacity, such as setting goals for rural electrification, renegotiating power agreements, improving the cylinder recirculation concept, and creating a petroleum center. Through the Energy Industry Recovery Programme (ESRP), he has concentrated on increasing the efficiency of the energy industry and resolving Ghana’s energy debt.
Downstream Petroleum Initiatives
Additionally, Dr. Prempeh promoted downstream petroleum operations, which resulted in the lifting of restrictions on the development of LPG refilling plants and the funding of the National LPG Promotion Programme (NLPGPP). The stabilisation of power supplies across regions, the commissioning of crucial infrastructure like transmission lines and substations, and the promotion of renewable energy through initiatives like the Kaleo/Lawra Solar Project
In keeping with the objective of guaranteeing a steady supply of electricity, significant initiatives like substation commissioning and transmission line upgrades made the power network more dependable.
Comprehensive sustainability measures
Dr. Prempeh put into practice a variety of sustainability measures, such as effective subsidy management, less reliance on wood fuels, and more reliance on clean energy sources. 2. Educational Sector
Free Senior High School (SHS) Policy Implementation
Dr. Prempeh played a crucial role in the effective implementation of the government’s flagship policy, the Free Senior High School program. With the elimination of financial constraints and an increase in enrollment rates, this programme aimed to give secondary school access to all Ghanaian pupils who were qualified.
Reforms to the curriculum
Dr. Prempeh’s leadership enabled the Ministry of Education to implement extensive curricular changes that will improve the standard and value of education. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s outstanding leadership has been recognised with honours, including being named the best minister in 2017 and 2019. Additionally, he received the Harvard Ministerial Medal of Achievement for 2020. As a result of his significant contributions to education, he was awarded honorary doctorates from illustrious universities, which recognised his commitment and successes as the Education Minister.
The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) honoured Dr.Matthew Opoku Prempeh as an outgoing Minister of Education for his significant contributions to education in Ghana, especially for his instrumental role in implementing the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme.
