The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has cautioned traders temporarily operating on pavements within the Central Business District (CBD) not to pay any fees beyond the official GH₵2 daily market toll approved by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).

According to the Mayor, the administration of President John Dramani Mahama remains committed to protecting the poor and vulnerable, hence the directive that no additional charges should be imposed on traders using pavements for their business activities.

Hon. Allotey issued the warning on Wednesday during a working visit to the CBD to educate traders on the issue of unauthorised fee collection and to ensure compliance with the Assembly’s regulations on street trading and sanitation.

Addressing the traders, the Mayor expressed concern about reports of individuals extorting money from hawkers and market women under the guise of collecting fees on behalf of the Assembly or his office. He described such actions as illegal and urged traders to resist and report anyone demanding unauthorised payments.
