The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has unveiled an ambitious vision to transform Ghana’s capital into a cleaner, safer, and more dynamic city. His plan focuses on sustainable sanitation management, the introduction of electric public transportation, and the expansion of urban lighting to drive a thriving 24-hour economy.

Speaking at a high-level roundtable discussion themed “Africa–UAE Urban Futures: Local Leadership in Action,” Mayor Allotey shared his ideas during the 2025 Asia Pacific Cities Summit and Mayors’ Forum, held at Expo City, Dubai, from 27th to 29th October 2025.

Representing Accra among 150 mayors and hundreds of urban experts from 350 cities across the globe, Mayor Allotey called on African leaders to take ownership of the continent’s development agenda by promoting homegrown, locally led urban solutions.

“We must look inward for solutions to Africa’s problems,” he emphasized, underscoring the importance of leadership rooted in empathy and local understanding.

“True leadership means recognizing the everyday struggles of our citizens and designing practical interventions that genuinely improve their quality of life.”

Mayor Allotey’s message resonated with the Summit’s broader focus on innovation, collaboration, and sustainable development, positioning Accra as a forward-looking city committed to inclusive and environmentally conscious growth.
