In a bold move to keep Accra clean and orderly during the festive rush, the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, took the Assembly’s Christmas revenue drive straight to the markets, engaging traders and market women face-to-face in the heart of the Central Business District (CBD).

Amid the hustle and bustle of peak Christmas trading, the Mayor delivered a firm message: approved tolls must be paid, and official receipts must be demanded.

He stressed that the festive boom in business also comes with increased pressure on sanitation, security, and city services, costs that can only be met through proper revenue collection.

Hon. Allotey made it clear that the holiday tolls are not arbitrary, but a lifeline for the city, funding intensive clean-up exercises, waste management, and public safety support at crowded markets and transport terminals during the Christmas season.

“Christmas brings more business, but it also brings more responsibility,” the Mayor noted, urging traders to see compliance as a direct investment in a cleaner, safer Accra.

The hands-on engagement sent a strong signal of the Assembly’s determination to tighten revenue collection while ensuring accountability, with the Mayor cautioning against unauthorized collectors and insisting on official receipts.

As Accra gears up for the festivities, the Mayor’s market tour underscores a clear message: a thriving Christmas economy must go hand in hand with discipline, transparency, and cleanliness in the capital.
