Telecommunication giant, MTN Ghana held a blood donation exercise in three Senior High Schools in Kumasi coincidentally with this year’s Valentine’s Day celebration.
The gesture was carried out in collaboration with health officials of the Blood Bank of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
Beneficiary schools were the KNUST, Asanteman and Bonwire Senior High Schools.
The move falls under MTN “Save a Life Campaign”, an annual blood donation initiative held on Valentine’s Day and organised by the MTN Ghana Foundation
It provides MTN staff and the general public with the opportunity to donate blood to help replenish the National Blood Bank and regional hospitals.
The initiative began in 2011 in response to appeals from the National Blood Service for voluntary contributions to address the critically low blood supplies.
Over the years the exercise has successfully raised over 29,000 units of blood.
This year’s goal is to collect 6,110 units of blood to help replenish the National Blood Service and the blood banks of major regional hospitals throughout the country.
Addressing the media on the sidelines of the donation at KNUST, Simon Amoh, the Senior Manager of General Trade (Northern Sector) underscored the gesture as MTN’s way of demonstrating love to people within communities it operates.
“Last year we got about 5,000 units of blood. This year we want to do more because more is needed.”
“We have envisaged doing more so that a lot of people can stay healthy “, he stressed.
