In a strongly worded statement issued today, Member of Parliament forΒ  Bantama Constituency, Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye, has condemned what he describes as the politically motivated removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by President John Dramani Mahama, calling it a β€œgrave threat to our democracy.”

Describing the dismissal as a β€œlong-planned scheme” executed with β€œprecision,” the MP in his comment shared on his official Facebook page accused President Mahama of deliberately undermining judicial independence, warning that the action could have dangerous consequences for the country’s democratic institutions.

β€œThis reckless move shatters judicial independence and strikes at the heart of our democracy,” Asenso-Boakye wrote on his official Facebook page. β€œIf a Chief Justice can be removed on flimsy grounds, tomorrow no judge will feel safe to uphold the Constitution.”

The statement reflects growing political tensions and rising concerns over the separation of powers in Ghana, with Asenso-Boakye asserting that the move amounts to β€œan assault on the very foundation of our Republic.”

β€œGhana has come too far to let the Rule of Law be hijacked,” he continued. β€œWe must resist every attempt to weaken our institutions. Ghana deserves better.”
