The General Overseer of Open Arms Ministry, St. Sark, has held President John Dramani Mahama responsible for the tragic helicopter crash which claimed the lives of state heroes on August 6, 2025.
Addressing newsmen at a press conference held on Saturday from his church auditorium in Kumasi, the outspoken clergyman questioned the rationale behind the representation of the President at the launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme in Obuasi.

In his view, the event was unnecessary.

“What were they going to do at Obuasi? To launch a responsible mining programme? It doesn’t make sense. How can you achieve responsible mining through surface mining? Can you fight galamsey that way?” he asked.

Describing the initiative as a “political charade,” St. Sark likened it to former President Akufo-Addo’s Community Mining initiative, which he claims yielded no meaningful results.

“These are just cosmetic moves in politics,” he said. “That strategy was tried before, and it failed. They end up recruiting the same galamsey boys under the guise of structured programmes.”
St. Sark did not mince words as he declared there was “no wisdom” in the officials’ mission to Obuasi, insisting it was ultimately a futile exercise.
“There was no wisdom in what they were going to do at Obuasi. For that reason, I blame President Mahama for their deaths,” he stated emphatically.
He further argued that responsible mining, if truly intended, could only be realized through deep mining methods — not surface mining.
“Anyone who says responsible mining can be done through surface mining is a comedian,” he remarked. “What President Mahama and his team are trying to do will go nowhere. It’s a dead elephant on arrival.”
The controversial cleric also revisited a set of radical anti-galamsey recommendations he claims to have previously submitted to President Mahama. These included:
- Deployment of drones to destroy illegal mining equipment
- A shoot-to-kill policy for galamsey operators
- The burning of excavators and machinery found at unauthorized mining sites
According to St. Sark, the government has failed to implement any of these proposals.
“None of these have been acted upon. I’ve already warned what would happen if the Office of the Spiritual President of Ghana is ignored. You’ll experience the shock of your life.”
In a solemn conclusion, he declared that those who perished in the crash “died in vain,” as the intended mission would have yielded no tangible benefit to the nation.
“Assuming the helicopter hadn’t crashed, their mission in Obuasi would still have led to nothing. They died for nothing good,” he said, directly addressing President Mahama.
