In a bold move to transform foundational education in Ghana, the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, today launched the Basic Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (BSTEM) training program in Sunyani. The initiative represents a strategic national investment aimed at strengthening STEM education from the ground up, with a focus on innovation, digital literacy, and problem-solving.

Speaking at the launch, Hon. Iddrisu emphasized the government’s commitment to reimagining how science and mathematics are taught in Ghanaian classrooms. He announced that the revised curriculum will incorporate Artificial Intelligence, coding, and robotics, shifting learning away from rote memorization toward inquiry-based and student-centered approaches.

“This initiative is pivotal for Ghana’s future,” the Minister stated. “We are laying the groundwork for a generation of thinkers, innovators, and scientists by equipping both students and teachers with the tools needed to thrive in a modern world.”

Hon. Iddrisu also paid tribute to Vice President, Her Excellency Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, acknowledging her instrumental role in initiating the Basic Science and Mathematics Project during her tenure as Minister for Education from 2012 to 2016.

That project has since evolved into what is now the BSTEM program.

“The vision she championed has become the foundation upon which we are building a more modern and responsive STEM education system,” he noted.

To support this transformation, the government is prioritizing teacher development, ensuring educators are trained in contemporary digital tools and instructional methods that foster creativity and engagement among young learners.

“A curriculum is only as effective as the teachers who deliver it,” Hon. Iddrisu remarked. “Our educators must be empowered to make STEM come alive in every classroom.”

In a significant announcement, the Minister also revealed plans to establish a state-of-the-art science laboratory in Koforidua in memory of the late Minister for Defense, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah. The facility is expected to serve as a national hub for innovation and STEM research.

As Ghana positions itself for a future rooted in technology and resilience, the BSTEM initiative is being hailed as a transformative step toward educational excellence and national development.
