In a bold move to boost revenue compliance and curb leakages, the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, on Tuesday led a high-profile revenue mobilisation and enforcement exercise at Kantamanto Market, located in the heart of the Central Business District (CBD).

The operation, carried out in collaboration with a newly deployed team of revenue collectors from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), focused on engaging traders, educating them on the importance of paying market tolls, and ensuring that all payments are made using official AMA tickets only.

Speaking directly to traders and market women, Mayor Allotey emphasized that the daily market toll of GH¢2 plays a vital role in funding key city services—including waste management, infrastructure maintenance, and other community development projects.

“Don’t allow anyone to deceive you,” he cautioned. “Always insist on your receipt after payment. We have two official tickets—one for revenue and one for waste collection. If someone demands more or presents unfamiliar tickets, don’t pay.”

The Mayor was joined by the Municipal Chief Executive for Korle Klottey, Hon. Alfred Allotey-Gaisie; the Metro Coordinating Director, Mr. Douglas N.K. Annoful; the Director of Finance at the AMA, Mr. Abeeku Amissah; and other senior officials.

The exercise forms part of a broader strategy by the AMA to improve its Internally Generated Funds (IGF) and ensure that revenue collected is reinvested back into the city for the benefit of its residents and traders alike.

The Mayor also urged traders to become watchdogs for their own businesses by demanding genuine receipts and reporting unauthorized collectors.

“Every cedi counts toward building a better Accra. When you pay tolls properly, you’re investing in your own market,” he added.
