In a startling revelation, Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, the former Majority Leader under the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration, has disclosed that he was the one who proposed Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming elections.
Speaking during a recent radio interview, Kyei Mensah Bonsu shared insights into the rigorous process of selecting a suitable running mate for Dr. Bawumia. “I was lucky to be part of the team who were tasked to select a running mate for Dr. Bawumia. We did our assessment in the Volta Region and couldn’t get anyone from our members to take up the running mate position. We went to Greater Accra, Central, and Western Regions to assess the people there but couldn’t get anyone,” he explained.
The process eventually brought the team to the Ashanti Region, where a decision was finally made.
“The long of the matter is that we came to the Ashanti Region and did our assessment. I will say the truth today that I was the one who proposed Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh to be the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” he revealed.
Kyei Mensah Bonsu also addressed ongoing speculation about his own potential candidacy as a running mate. “So when I heard people saying that Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu should be the running mate to Dr. Bawumia, I had already spoken. I have been Majority Leader, Minority Leader, and Chief Whip. I can say that I even qualify for flagbearer. However, every time has its leader, and I think the time was not right,” he stated.
The former Majority Leader further explained the rationale behind his proposal, emphasizing the importance of succession planning. “I also considered that the person we chose as running mate should be someone who can succeed Dr. Bawumia after he completes his eight-year term as President. That’s why I proposed Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh,” he concluded.
