Staff of Ashanti Regional Tourism Authority embarked on a clean-up exercise at the Bonwire Kente Museum on Friday, 27th September, 2024.

The activity was carried out as part of the celebration of the World Tourism Day; an occasion commemorated annually to raise awareness about the relevance of tourism, its cultural, social and economic values.

Joining Bonwire Kente weavers at the attraction, they swept the frontage and forecourt of the museum.

Overgrown green grass within the lawn were also mowed, cobwebs cleared among others.

The clean-up was abruptly followed up with a guided tour of the facility, conducted by Baffour Asare Gyeabour (Manager of Bonwire Kente Museum).

Through the foregoing, staff of Ashanti Regional Tourism Authority were briefed on the history of Kente weaving.

Visiting the exhibition room, they were schooled on the evolution of Kente weaving, types of Kente weaving and patterns of Kente.

This year’s World Tourism Day celebration was held under the theme: “Tourism and Peace”.

Addressing www.leakyghana.com after the exercise, Mrs. Mavis Gyasi, Deputy Ashanti Regional Director for Ghana Tourism Authority described tourism as a catalyst for peace and understanding, saying “tourism is a tool that brings the world together”.

She said the authority is focused at prioritizing the needs of local communities, protection of one’s cultural and natural resources and also ensuring that its benefits are shared equitably.

Touching on culture, she admonished Ghanaians on the need to preserve culture and heritage, saying it helps reduce tension in communities and enhance coexistence, thereby promoting interdependence between neighbours.

“Let’s respect each other’s culture. There is beauty in diversity as the values we share are what unite us. If we do that we can ride on the power of tourism to advance peace and prosperity for all”.
