GNECC CONDEMNS VIOLENCE AT O’REILLY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL AND CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION

The Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) expresses deep concern and condemnation regarding the recent tragic incident at O’Reilly Senior High School, where a final-year general art student, Edward Borketey Sackey, lost his life following an altercation with a fellow student.
On Monday, September 2, a dispute over personal matters escalated into violence, leading to the fatal stabbing of Edward by a colleague, Godwin.
The confrontation reportedly began as a disagreement over perceived wealth and status, resulting in a tragic outcome.
Edward was pronounced dead upon arrival at LEKMA hospital after being stabbed three times in the chest.
The Greater Accra Regional Director of Education, Stephen Abamfo, has confirmed the arrest of the alleged
attacker and stated that a full-scale investigation is underway.
GNECC supports this investigation and calls for a thorough and transparent process to ensure justice is served.
The Coalition also advocates for urgent measures to address violence in schools and to provide support for students facing conflicts.
We are deeply saddened by this incident and extend our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
Such acts of violence have no place in our educational institutions. We urge all stakeholders to collaborate in creating safer school environments and to ensure that support systems are in place to handle conflicts constructively.
GNECC calls on the Ministry of Education and relevant authorities to take immediate action to prevent such
occurrences in the future.
The Coalition emphasizes the importance of implementing effective conflict resolution programs and mental health support within schools to address underlying issues before they escalate.
GNECC also calls on the Ghana Education Service and teacher unions to periodically orient their teachers on how to ensure discipline and resolve conflict in schools.
GNECC is committed to working with educational authorities and community leaders to foster a culture of peace
and respect in our schools.
