Deeply honoured to have been part of former President John Mahama’s delegation to Russia for the formal launch of the Russian translation of his memoir, ‘My First Coup D’etat and Other Stories from the Lost Decades of Africa,’ at the prestigious 300-year-old Russian Academy of Sciences.
President Mahama becomes only the second Ghanaian leader after Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah to have his book translated into the Russian language.
The Russian Academy of Sciences recalled with great pride how Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s book, ‘I speak of Freedom’ has been a sensational bestseller for decades since its Russian translation.
It is always of great pride to be a Ghanaian at such international fora when you hear renowned intellectuals and people from varying backgrounds speak profoundly about how Dr. Nkrumah inspires them, and how the Osagyefo’s legacy continues to open doors for many Africans.
An instructive reminder that wise African leaders do not launch futile attacks on Nkrumah’s unrivaled legacy and unmatched vision; they rather learn from him in humility and work hard to leverage Nkrumah’s towering global accomplishments towards achieving Nkrumah’s dream of total emancipation and empowerment of the African people.
I congratulate President Mahama and hope that as many more people around the world read his fascinating memoir, it would help enhance Ghana’s image abroad and foster better understanding of Ghana’s unique history and heritage.

It was particularly refreshing to see many Ghanaian scholars currently researching and lecturing in Russia and Ghana’s Ambassador to Russia, H.E. Dr. Oheneba Lesley Akyaa Opoku Ware and her colleague diplomats from our Embassy in Moscow make time to participate at the launch.
