Executives of Muslim Family Counseling Services (MFCS) are pushing for the enforcement of the laws that frown against the practice of child marriage in Ghana.
Owing to the prevalence of child brides in certain parts of the county, they believe enforcement will be a critical tool to eradicate the harmful practice.
They have expressed dismay over why girls vitimised by the practice are until now not protected by the law as though it is legal for them to be married as children.
As Africa prepares to mark the Day of the African Child on Sunday, 16th June, 2024, Mr. Bun Bida Mohammed, Director for MFCS told www.leakghana.com that a comprehensive implementation of the law including a focus on addressing the drivers of child marriage is vital to ending the harmful practice.
He also called on the leadership to address issues that contribute to child labour in the country.
Among them are lack of reliable access to education, external cultural influences and poor regulation of child labor laws.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Education for All Children In Africa: The Time Is Now”.
Speaking on the theme, Mr. Bun Bida said as the celebrate the occasion, authorities should initiate more actions to address all barriers affecting the education of the girl-child.
