President Akufo-Addo has commissioned VRA’s 150-megawatt Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Plant (K1TPP) and the Kumasi Pipeline Project by Genser Energy at Anwomaso, Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

This happened on Wednesday, 17th April, 2024.

It is the first in the Greater Kumasi and its contiguous areas across the Ashanti Region.

The project according to officials will improve the delivery of electricity to the middle and northern belts of the country and serve as further confirmation, if any was needed, of government’s resolve to ensuring that all parts of the country have the necessary energy infrastructure for development.

Gracing the commissioning were Ghana’s Energy Minister Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Ashanti Regional Minister Hon. Simon Osei Mensah, Joseph Osei-Wusu among others.

According to President Akufo-Addo, the renowned attribute of the Ashanti Region as a hub of small and medium scale commercial and industrial businesses means that, with enhanced electricity supply, these businesses will expand and offer employment opportunities to the youth.

“It is gratifying to note that the gas transmission infrastructure for this power station was constructed from Prestea to Anwomaso through a collaboration between the Ghana National Petroleum Company (GNPC) and Genser Energy Ghana Limited, a dynamic Ghanaian-owned energy company”, he indicated.

Ghana’s Energy Minister underlined that the move was pursuant to a policy decision in 2022, to establish a power generation enclave in Anwomasi-Kumasi, to improve the reliability and quality of power supply in Kumasi for the middle belt and the northern parts of the country.

“We have under the leadership of His Excellency the President worked assiduously to deliver on this promise and we have kept faith with the people.

As we work to towards the second phase to deliver an additional 100MW in June this year, I congratulate warmly, the VRA who on their own carried out the relocation, reinstallation and repowering of the plant, in a seamless manner. It is a testament of the NPP belief in Ghanaian ingenuity and capability.

The NPP government remains resolute in our collective vision for a stable, robust and affordable energy sector that will serve as a catalyst for industrial growth and economic prosperity not only in the Ashanti Region but the whole country”.
