Officials of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) will soon impose fresh levies on persons and institutions engaged in commercial activities within the CBD, www.leakyghana.com has gathered.
The levy has been strategically adorned with the official name “Special CBD Waste Management Support Fee”.
It will be used to sustain the implementation of the 2.5 million European Union funded Holistic Reinforcement for Sustainable Development (HORESD) project, which has improving the sanitation situation of the city of Kumasi as one of its objectives.
Per information gathered, fees will charged based on the kind of items or the kind of business persons are engaged in.
Charges ascribed to each trade are catalogued below;
1. Stores/Shops- GHs 2.00
2. Institutions – GHs 4
3. Chop Bars- GHs 10
4. Restaurants – GHs 3
5. Coconut Sellers – GHs 10
6. Financial Institutions – GHs 300 per month.
These were disclosed at a sensitization workshop, organised by the leadership of United Traders Forum on Tuesday, 9th April, 2024 at the Adum SSNIT conference hall with funding support from STAR GHANA.
At the workshop, Senior Development Planning Officer at KMA, Mr. Takyi Edward said authorities will on Friday, 12th April, 2024 engage traders in a dialogue and also embark on an intensive public education on how helpful payment of the fees will be.
He underlined that considering the quantum of money spent daily KMA on sanitation under the project, persons engaged in commercial activities and institutions within the CBD must endeavor to pay to help ensure continuity of the HORESD project after its official closure.
