Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has arrived in Latvia for a two-day official visit aimed at clarifying the circumstances surrounding the death of Ghanaian student Nana Agyei Ahyia.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, the minister said the visit follows concerns raised by Ghanaians over what he described as “distressing and unclear circumstances” surrounding the student’s death.

He noted that the trip fulfills a commitment he made to personally pursue truth and justice in the matter.
Hon. Ablakwa said he was warmly received by Latvia’s Foreign Minister, Her Excellency Baiba Braže, with whom he held bilateral discussions.

According to the Ghanaian minister, the Latvian government has given firm assurances of full cooperation with Ghanaian authorities in the ongoing investigations.

The Foreign Affairs Minister is leading a six-member delegation comprising senior officials from Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as a forensic expert and a pathologist.

He disclosed that two family members of the deceased, who were expected to join the delegation, were delayed due to visa processing challenges but have since been issued visas and are scheduled to arrive in Latvia to join the team.

Hon. Ablakwa further clarified that all members of the delegation, including the family representatives and experts, are fully funded by Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He dismissed allegations circulating on social media regarding extortion or the issuance of fake travel tickets, describing them as baseless and unsupported by evidence.

The delegation is expected to continue engagements with Latvian authorities, including officials from the Ministries of Interior and Education, as well as investigators handling the case.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad, the minister stated that Ghana’s Foreign Ministry remains “focused and resolute in safeguarding the welfare and dignity of all Ghanaians.”
