The Member of Parliament for the Subin Constituency, Lawyer Kofi Obiri Yeboah, has commiserated with victims of a recent fire outbreak that occurred at Dagomba Line in the Subin Municipality last Saturday.
The victims, who are predominantly Ghanaian traders from the northern part of the country, have for several years lived and operated in the area, residing mainly in wooden structures that served as both their homes and places of business.
Lawyer Obiri Yeboah visited the affected area on Wednesday to assess the extent of the devastation and to offer words of encouragement and support to the victims.
The fire outbreak razed down more than 200 wooden structures, including a mosque, leaving many residents displaced and without shelter.
Speaking after the inspection, the MP expressed deep sorrow over the level of destruction, describing the incident as even more heartbreaking than last year’s Adum–Blue Light fire disaster.
He noted that the situation at Dagomba Line was particularly painful because the affected area served as a home for many of the victims.
Addressing the media, Lawyer Obiri Yeboah emphasized the urgent need for support from government, corporate institutions, and well-meaning individuals, as many of the affected persons currently have no place to sleep.
As part of his immediate intervention, the MP donated an amount of GH¢10,000 to the victims. He also appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to initiate a comprehensive support programme, including the construction of durable and permanent structures in the area to provide decent accommodation for the displaced residents.
Lawyer Obiri Yeboah further pledged to lobby institutions and individuals for additional support, similar to the efforts he led for traders affected by the Adum–Blue Light fire disaster last year.
The Chairman of the settlers in the area, Nasiru Zibilim, expressed gratitude to the MP for his visit, financial support, and commitment to advocating for further assistance on their behalf.
