The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has launched a new Education Support Fund aimed at supporting the children of farmers and fishermen within the Accra Metropolis.

The fund, established with a GHC 50,000 seed amount, is expected to provide school fees, scholarships, and other forms of educational assistance to beneficiaries.

The seed fund includes GHC 30,000 contributed by Mayor Allotey and an additional GHC 20,000 donated by the Member of Parliament for Odododiodioo, Hon. Alfred Nii Kotey Ashie.

Unveiling the initiative during the 41st National Farmers and Fishers’ Day celebration at the forecourt of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) on Friday, the Mayor emphasised that the gesture recognises the significant role farmers and fishermen play in national development.

According to Mayor Allotey, the Education Support Fund is designed to ensure that no child is deprived of schooling due to their parents’ economic circumstances or occupation. “This fund will provide targeted assistance to the wards of farmers and fishermen so that no child is denied an education because of their parents’ occupation or income level,” he stated.

He added that the initiative forms part of efforts to make farming and fishing more appealing to the younger generation by highlighting how these professions can guarantee a dignified and secure future for families.

Addressing journalists after the launch, the Mayor noted that the intervention aligns with the government’s broader support for farmers under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama. He stressed that the AMA is committed to complementing national efforts by offering direct assistance to families whose livelihoods sustain the city’s food systems.

The Education Support Fund is expected to roll out its first round of support packages in the coming months.
