The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is feeling fresh tremors of internal unrest after firebrand politician Hon. Irene Naa Torshie launched a blistering response to critics questioning her decision to abandon Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s camp in favour of Hon. Kennedy Agyapong ahead of the 2028 flagbearer race.

Addressing journalists in Kumasi on Sunday, the outspoken former MP did not hold back.

She stated emphatically that her support for Dr. Bawumia ended the moment the NPP suffered what she described as a humiliating defeat in the 2024 general elections, a performance she believes made a change of direction inevitable.

“I thought he (Bawumia) was going to do well,” she said.

“After the 2024 elections and how poorly we performed, I realized the formula must change. I have the right to do so.”

Naa Torshie, known for her no-nonsense political style, declared without hesitation:

“My candidate for now is Kennedy Agyapong.”

But her sharpest blow was reserved for those she believes are selectively targeting her for criticism.

Since openly campaigning for Kennedy Agyapong, she says she has faced a barrage of attacks from detractors; attacks she insists are rooted in double standards.

In a direct challenge to her critics, she pointed out that several prominent NPP figures who backed Bawumia in 2024 including Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Hon. Osei Yaw Adutwum, Kwabena Agyapong are all now contesting him for the flagbearer position. Yet none of them, she argues, has been subjected to the same hostility she has endured.

“Why are people not insulting them?” she fired back.

Her remarks have thrust internal party contradictions into the spotlight, raising questions about factionalism, loyalty, and the true state of unity within the NPP as the battle for 2028 intensifies.

With her characteristic boldness, Hon. Naa Torshie has made one thing unmistakably clear: she will not be intimidated, she will not retreat, and her political energy is now firmly behind Kennedy Agyapong.
