The campaign against diabetes in the capital city received a major boost on World Diabetes Day when the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, joined more than 200 residents in a public screening exercise at the forecourt of the Accra City Hall.

His participation was widely viewed as a demonstration of leadership by example amid rising cases of diabetes and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the metropolis.

The health screening, organised by the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) in partnership with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA) and the Frankel Foundation for Diabetics, formed part of a citywide push to intensify awareness and promote early detection of chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes.
Speaking after completing his own screening, Mayor Allotey underscored the importance of regular health checks, noting that early detection allows individuals to manage diabetes effectively and avoid complications.

He warned against waiting until symptoms worsen, stressing that “early action is always better than late regret.”
The Mayor said Accra must set the pace in preventive healthcare by normalising simple but effective practices like routine screening. He urged residents to schedule medical check-ups every two to three months and to treat health as a priority rather than an afterthought.
Health officials at the event commended the turnout and described the Mayor’s participation as a morale booster that encouraged many attendees to take the screening seriously.
They said the exercise marked an important step toward building a more health-conscious city capable of tackling the growing burden of NCDs.
