MTN Ghana is intensifying efforts to protect the wellbeing of its workforce through a reinforced road safety culture, beginning with its first 2025 training session for drivers and staff in the Northern Sector.

Held at the MTN office in Nhyiaeso, Kumasi, the program reflects the company’s strategic focus on safeguarding employees who operate on Ghana’s increasingly high-risk roads.

The collaboration with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service signals MTN’s shift toward a more robust internal occupational safety system.

With thousands of staff and an active fleet supporting nationwide operations, MTN considers road safety not just a regulatory requirement but a critical component of employee welfare.

Chief Superintendent Alexander Kwaku Obeng of the MTTD underscored the urgent need for such interventions. Citing the alarming 11,000 road crashes recorded between January and October 2025, he warned that the rising death toll demands corporate involvement in protecting workers who spend long hours on the road.

“MTN’s decision to enhance its internal training aligns with national efforts to reduce avoidable road crashes. Prioritizing the safety of staff on duty is essential,” he said.

A Workplace Safety Imperative

MTN Ghana’s biannual capacity-building program is part of its Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) framework, which requires all staff, especially drivers to undergo continuous road safety refreshers.

The training covers defensive driving, hazard assessment, compliance with traffic laws, and vehicle maintenance, all aimed at reducing work-related risks.

These initiatives support MTN’s long-standing focus on employee welfare, demonstrated through its long record of corporate road safety awards and zero-tolerance policy for traffic violations involving company vehicles.

Empowering Staff for Safer Work Journeys

According to MTN, every journey made by its staff, whether transporting equipment, supporting field operations, or commuting must be safe and compliant with national standards.

This has made road safety a mandatory induction module for all new employees and an area of continuous professional development for drivers.

By strengthening its OHS systems and partnering with expert bodies like the MTTD, MTN Ghana is reinforcing its commitment to a work environment where staff safety is non-negotiable.

The initiative ultimately aims to protect not only employees, but customers and the wider public who share the road with MTN vehicles.
