Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is steering a renewed push for economic diplomacy as he undertakes an official visit to Qatar, focused on securing investment, expanding job opportunities, and positioning Ghana as a competitive player in global partnerships.

In a statement released on his official Facebook page, Ablakwa confirmed that he is in Qatar at the invitation of the country’s Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani.

Their bilateral talks, he said, were geared toward redefining the economic relationship between the two nations.
At the heart of the discussions was the shared commitment to boost trade and create a friendlier environment for business between Ghana and Qatar. Both governments agreed to ease visa requirements ; an intervention expected to stimulate business travel, reduce logistical barriers, and support sectors such as aviation, tourism, and cargo operations already linked through existing direct flights.

One of the standout outcomes of the visit is the agreement to expedite a labour mobility framework that will enable thousands of skilled Ghanaian workers to access structured opportunities in Qatar. Analysts say this move fits into Ghana’s broader strategy of reducing unemployment while enhancing remittance contributions to the national economy.
The two nations also announced plans to co-host a Presidential Ghana–Qatar Business Forum when President John Mahama visits Doha next month. The forum is expected to attract Qatari investors interested in Ghana’s mining, agriculture, logistics, energy, and technology sectors, potentially unlocking fresh capital for major national development projects.
Beyond economics, the talks touched on security collaboration and joint efforts in peace mediation—areas that enhance Ghana’s diplomatic footprint on the global stage.
Ablakwa concluded his statement by reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening Ghana–Qatar ties, describing the partnership as one grounded in mutual benefit and long-term stability.
