The First Lady of Sierra Leone, Madam Fatima Maada Bio, joined senior government officials, military officers, and other dignitaries on Monday morning at the Cenotaph on George Street, Freetown, for the national Remembrance Day Service.

In a statement shared on her official Facebook page, Madam Bio described the occasion as an honour and solemn duty, attending in her capacity as the wife of the Commander-in-Chief of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces.

Held under the theme “For a better future, remember yesterday and act today,” the interfaith service brought together citizens and leaders to pay tribute to the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives in the service of peace and national duty.
“We remembered those who fell during World War I, World War II, the Sierra Leone Civil War, the Ebola epidemic, the November 26 failed coup, and other moments of national sacrifice,” the First Lady stated. “As we laid wreaths and stood in solemn reflection, I was reminded of the weight of their service and the responsibility we bear to preserve the peace they fought for.”

She emphasized that the memories of these fallen heroes should serve as a guiding light for the nation, fostering unity, resilience, and lasting peace.
Remembrance Day is observed annually in Sierra Leone to honour servicemen and women who lost their lives in wars and national crises, and to reaffirm the country’s commitment to peace and stability.
