The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), has held discussions with the Chief Executive Officer of the Stellar Development Foundation (SDF), Ms. Denelle Dixon, on the rollout of the Akuna Wallet, a new digital payment platform aimed at enhancing financial inclusion and empowering Ghana’s creative industry.

The meeting, held earlier today, explored avenues for collaboration between the Ministry, SDF, and the Akuna Group, co-founded by internationally acclaimed actor Idris Elba, to provide seamless global payment solutions for Ghanaian creators, freelancers, and entrepreneurs.

Hon. George commended the initiative, describing it as a timely innovation that aligns with government’s agenda to support the creative economy through technology. He expressed the Ministry’s willingness to facilitate pilot testing of the platform with local content creators.
“This initiative has the potential to transform how Ghanaian creatives access and manage their earnings globally,” Hon. George stated. “By leveraging secure digital payment tools like the Akuna Wallet, we can enhance financial inclusion, boost innovation, and strengthen Ghana’s growing digital economy.”

For her part, Ms. Denelle Dixon explained that the Akuna Wallet, developed under the supervision of the Bank of Ghana, enables users to receive international payments instantly and convert them into Ghana cedis through a secure, blockchain-based platform.
She added that the wallet also provides virtual U.S. bank accounts, allowing Ghanaian creators to monetize content on global platforms such as X, Facebook, and TikTok without the need for intermediaries or complex payment channels.
Ms. Dixon further revealed that the Akuna Wallet forms part of a broader digital ecosystem that includes Akuna Studios and Akuna Pods, all designed to create new economic opportunities within Africa’s creative and digital sectors.
The full launch of the platform is expected by December 2025, pending regulatory clearance.
The engagement marks another step in the government’s ongoing efforts to harness digital innovation for economic growth and position Ghana as a hub for creative technology in Africa.
