The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in the Ashanti Region has renewed calls for stronger safety measures for journalists following an accident that left some media personnel injured during an assignment on illegal mining activities.

The journalists were reportedly covering an official operation against galamsey in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) when the unfortunate incident occurred.

In a statement signed by Regional Chairman Kofi Adu Domfeh, the GJA said the accident underscores the dangers journalists face while reporting from high-risk environments.

“This unfortunate incident highlights the inherent risks associated with the critical work our members undertake in pursuit of public interest,” the statement noted. “The safety, welfare, and protection of journalists remain paramount to the GJA.”

The Association assured that it is engaging relevant authorities to ensure the affected journalists receive the needed medical and emotional support.

Mr. Domfeh further urged institutions that engage the media in field operations particularly in hazardous areas to prioritize journalist safety through proper planning, risk assessment, and coordination before such exercises.

The GJA reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for safer working conditions for journalists, especially those on the frontlines of environmental and investigative reporting.

“As journalists continue to bring national attention to environmental and social challenges, we must ensure that no story costs a life,” the statement emphasized.
