Former Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has expressed profound condolences following the passing of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, former First Lady of Ghana.

In a post on his official Facebook page, Dr. Prempeh reflected on 2025 as a particularly heavy year for the nation, marked by the loss of prominent leaders.

He described Nana Konadu’s death as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and offered his sincere sympathies to her family and loved ones.
“This year has been a heavy one for our nation, with the loss of many great men and women. The passing of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings is yet another poignant reminder of how fragile life is,” Dr. Prempeh wrote.

Nana Konadu’s political legacy is inseparable from her role as First Lady from 1981 to 2001 and as a trailblazer for women in Ghanaian politics.
She was the founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement, a powerful platform that mobilized women for socio-economic development and political participation.
She also made history as the first woman to run for the presidency in Ghana’s Fourth Republic, paving the way for female political leadership in the country.
Dr. Prempeh’s tribute highlights the broader national and political significance of her passing. By noting that “this year has been a heavy one,” he positioned Nana Konadu among other influential figures whose absence marks a generational transition in Ghana’s leadership landscape.
Her death is being felt across party lines, reflecting her stature as a unifying figure and a symbol of principled service. Political commentators suggest that her advocacy for women’s empowerment, social justice, and leadership development has left an enduring imprint on Ghana’s political culture.
“Her life was one of service and leadership — a legacy we must continue to uphold,” Dr. Prempeh emphasized, underscoring the importance of translating her vision into ongoing political and civic engagement.
As tributes continue to pour in from political leaders, civil society, and ordinary citizens, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings is remembered not only as a former First Lady but as a political trailblazer whose influence extended far beyond the ceremonial, shaping policy, party dynamics, and the empowerment of women in governance.
May her soul rest in perfect peace.
