Ghana has scored a significant diplomatic win as the United States officially lifts visa restrictions previously imposed on Ghanaian citizens.

The announcement was made today by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, through a statement shared on his official Facebook page.

According to the Minister, the breakthrough was communicated directly to him by US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, during a bilateral meeting held on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations General Assembly in New York.

“This good news was directly communicated to me by US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker at a bilateral meeting earlier today, in the margins of the UN General Assembly,” Hon. Ablakwa stated.

With the reversal, Ghanaian citizens are now eligible for five-year multiple entry visas to the United States, along with other enhanced consular privileges; a major upgrade from the previous restrictions.

The United States had earlier imposed visa limitations on Ghana and several other countries in July 2025, citing long-standing issues related to visa overstays, particularly among Ghanaian students. Under those restrictions, Ghanaian applicants were limited to a maximum of three-month single-entry visas, significantly curtailing travel and professional mobility between the two countries.

“I am really pleased that months of high-level diplomatic negotiations has led to a successful outcome,” the Foreign Affairs Minister remarked, highlighting the intensive efforts that led to the policy shift.

The development marks a renewed strengthening of Ghana–US relations, with Minister Ablakwa describing it as indicative of “healthier and stronger” bilateral ties.

“This is a big win for Ghana,” he concluded. “For God and Country.”

The announcement has already sparked positive reactions across social and diplomatic circles, signaling improved cooperation between Accra and Washington going forward.
