President of 50 Plus Foundation, Ms. Genevieve Kwakye has urged Ghanaian youth to shun abuse of drugs.

This follows the alarming surge in the abuse of opioid, popularly referred to as “wonim Red” which is raising red flags for health officials.

She has described the status-quo as worrying, explaining that addiction to these powerful painkillers triggers severe health risks including mental disorders.

She made the above indication in an interview with newsmen on the sidelines of a donation of food items made by the foundation to mental health patients of Cheshire Rehabilitation Home at Dwenase on Sunday, 18th May, 2025.

She told newsmen that the highly addictive nature of opioids coupled with the rate of abuse in Ghana calls for strict regulations against their importation.

Ms. Genevieve Kwakye underscored that avoiding abuse of drugs will save the Ghana’s future since the youth will not be lost to the substance.

Donation

Through the gesture, executives of the foundation succeeded in feeding over 50 mental health patients at the rehabilitation center with soft drinks, fried chicken and loaves of sandwiched bread.

They also presented an undisclosed amount of money to support services offered at the facility.

Director for the facility, Father Theophilus Agyeman Nyamekye thanked the foundation after the presentation.

He described the gesture as the kind that comes from a good heart.

He remarked that aside the health benefits that the food will offer, the generous act will make the patients know that people still care for them.

Father Theophilus Agyeman therefore called on well-to-do institutions and individuals to extend a hand of support to the facility to address the needs of the mental patients.

Donation at Calvary Methodist Church

Preceding the above gesture was a presentation of scarfs and loaves of bread by the foundation, same day at the Calvary Methodist Church at Amakom, Kumasi.

Women aged from 75 were given head scarf each whereas the loaves of bread were presented as an offertory.

Joining them was Ghana’s famous Kumawood Actress Portia Asare Boateng.
