Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has come out swinging against what he describes as a “desperate and fabricated lie” , refuting viral claims that he has awarded a staggering US$5.2 million contract for the renovation of Ghana’s embassy in Benin.

In a no-holds-barred statement posted to his official Facebook page, Ablakwa minced no words, branding the allegation as completely baseless and calling on the public to “treat with utter contempt” the reports making the rounds online.

“Let me be clear . Not a single embassy renovation or construction contract has been awarded by me since I became Foreign Minister,” he wrote. “I have not awarded any embassy renovation contract anywhere in the world.”

In a dramatic twist, the Minister revealed that rather than authorizing bloated deals, he has been actively cancelling questionable ones. He cited the recent termination of a US$3.5 million single-source contract to renovate Ghana’s embassy in Abidjan; a deal he claims was rushed through on November 7, 2024, just days before the Mahama administration took office.

The contract, described by insiders as a “midnight deal,” was scrapped by Ablakwa as part of what he calls a personal crusade to protect public funds and restore sanity to foreign service spending.
“I shall never betray the trust of the Ghanaian people,” he vowed, aligning himself squarely with President Mahama’s much-touted Reset Agenda, a policy thrust aimed at cleaning up the excesses of the past government and rebuilding public trust.
The shocking allegation and Ablakwa’s fiery response have set political circles abuzz, with many watching closely to see whether any further revelations or retractions will emerge.
As tensions rise, one thing is clear: Ghana’s new Foreign Minister is not backing down from a fight especially when integrity is on the line.
