The Ashanti Regional Chairman of GPRTU, Alhaji Sumaila Boakye has ordered all commercial drivers under the union to reduce transport fares by 15 percent, effective Saturday, 24th May, 2025.

Addressing the media in Kumasi on Friday, he said as the union takes lead by reducing their fares following the decrease in fuel prices, they also expect spare parts dealers, food vendors, insurances companies plus other service providers to follow suit.

His demand was premised on the refusal on the part of the latter entities to reduce prices and charges of their products and services, owing to the cost of transportation.

Alhaji Sumaila told newsmen that, executives of the union will advise themselves on the next action to take if they fail to follow suit by reducing prices and charges of their goods and services.

The 15 percent reduction of transport fare is an outcome of a meeting held between the National Executives of the GPRTU and the Minister of Transport.

The reduction is a direct result of the decrease in fuel prices.

The downward adjustment of the fare is expected to impact intra-city, inter-city, and shared taxi services.

As a way of ensuring full compliance, the Chairman has ordered guards of the union to carry out effective monitoring at the various transport stations in the region from Monday, 26th May, 2025.

The guards have been directed to report drivers or stations caught defaulting the directive for the necessary disciplinary action.
